Something like this, and all the other fixes that need to be made could get me interested in playing again... Why it was never done properly and accepted as normal in ALL online games I have no idea.

I did about 20% of the work I wanted to do regarding tweaking all the current useless units and making them usable. Then I got too bored. I'm sure I'll pick it up again when I find the motivation.

I tried doing a mod for a while but similarly lost interest half through and didn't finish it. The idea was based around the way Street Fighter 2 was rebalanced. Leave all the most powerful units the way they were. Tweak the 2nd tier units so they were still less useful but more frequently viable in certain situations. Then I was going to just take out all the bad units rather than overcomplicate matters and find new roles for them. The idea being that everything would be broadly the same as OTA but just slightly more varied. The failing of most TA mods in my opinion is they tend to turn everything on its head and you'll never have enough pro players to tear the game apart like you have in OTA. There's no replacement for 14 years of competitive play. Why try and reinvent the wheel.
This improved pathfinding fix has been incorporated into a new mod. It's called the 4.0 patch. It remains to be seen wether it catches on but it looks like this might become the defacto standard for online play. It doesn't fuck with any of the game balance. The idea is you install TA, CC and this patch and it'll install everything else you need to play online in one file without having to download the TA Demo recorder, 3.1 patch and extra units and maps. Wether it'll take off remains to be seen but we'll see in time.
