Scott, that's inspirational. TOTALLY feel what you're saying. Completely. I'm finding myself looking back now and loving the old days...
Heh, I've spent waaaay too long playing this game. There were days when I used to get up (usually during school/college holidays) at 6pm just as the free dial-up began and would play until 6am the following morning when it ran out. That was until I got broadband, and then things began looking up. Playing online during the day was a new thing, so I did it all day every day. My modem only ever connected at 28kbps but broadband was a new lease of life. Emac can tell you some of the laggy games we used to have, especially on maps like MH and that Core one... CPIA or something. I was noob then. Of course, I'm still noob now but a noob with memories.
I had a habit of playing TA when everything else in life was a bit much. It was an escape. I used to play to take out stress, and one thing that developed was a loved of playing alongside my other clanmates. It didn't matter which one was online at the time. They would always play. When noone was online I was usually forced to 1v1 against someone I thought was better and more often than not ended up letting myself get beaten. Most of it was psychological and it used to annoy me a lot... a lot of a lot.
TA, for whatever reason is a part of us all now. Just think in 50 years time where you'll be and remember that we all used to play together. It doesnt matter what you go through or where you'll be, we have had all these games, we have spent all this time together and noone can take those memories from us. I know I think back fondly on the times we all used to just sit and play. Hell, I remember Gamespy with 100 people at least though MP was before my time... watching a TAD isn't just learning the game, it's watching an event in time back again. It's like a photograph. It's preserved, and we can share our memories through things like TADRs. I've got games from years ago, and I can watch them back and relive the game.
I remember everything that's happened whether for good or for bad. I remember Cassie and Bloodstorm, Fishy going on a rampage and everything that happened with Ian. I remember playing Sammy, his lovely 8 year old kid. I remember Merl running rings around the GS admins and GaMi being permanently banned on Gamespy for the first time. I remember Vinja's old PRO clan site. I remember the time Razer asked me to join Cyberarmy. I remember the first time I heard PRO_rANDY over Skype. I've subjected most of the PRO's to my lack of musical talent at some point by sending them poor quality home-made "budget trance" mp3s. I remember playing n1_Iggij in his first ever game on the Pass and beating him. As if that would happen now... I've never met Pic. I regret that. At times, the TA community has been more like a soap than real life. It's a support group. I've made some amazing friends through it though, so I'll take the bad with the good.
Funny thing is, TA was the very first game I ever got. I never told anyone this for fear of sounding like a noob. I got it waaay back with my first computer in 1998. I played the campaigns, and then it sat doing nothing for about 4 years until I found the internet. It was the first game I played online and its the only one I'm still playing. I remember the first few games I played against my mate Jonesey. It was pretty much even until I played one game online against someone I didn't know on one of the clients. I can't remember which one, but it was the first time I encountered the mass-samson technique. I'd never seen it before, and I wish for the life of me I could remember what the name of that player was. After that I put TA down for a bit, but I came back to it. That's when I started trouncing my mate and realised that there were different tier's of player. I didn't know what a clan was before I started TA online. At first they seemed like they were groups of friends who just wanted people to play with, or alongside. I joined one called "RIOT" which lasted the best part of 3 weeks. This was within the first 3 or 4 weeks of having begun again online. It must have been around 3 and a half years ago I started. I know it was in March. The first person I met and got to know was Razer, now known as PRO_-|[Razer]|-_. I was really competitive at first and wanted to win every game in the name of RIOT. After that failed, Raze went off to do something else. We still chatted, but he found something else. Then I started playing for myself and came across PRO. They were funny, and loved having a good time. I was a little afraid of them because I thought they would "hack" me. I remember GaMi and Merl in their prime. I remember Emac getting into PRO before me after we played so many games and it really annoying me. This was in about July/August time of the same year. Razer joined after that. He got into the whole programming side of things and joined an anti-hacker organisation called Cyberarmy. I ended up joining under him and met a guy known as SpikeyCheese. Sometime after that I found a connection to God. I'm lucky enough to have been able to tell Spikey about everything I saw and I think it's done something positive for him, but Spikey and I also managed to help out Razer in an hour of need. TA helped me help someone else out... and if Christianity is real, then TA has helped save people's souls. Finding God in TA... freaky stuff.
TA is the one game that inspired me to come to university and study this particular course - MEng Computer Science with Games Development (honestly, it played a BIG part in my decision!) I've had it for ages, and I remember playing it offline. The music still gives me shivers. It's so dark. Its like Star Wars!!! The Moscow Philharmonic orchestra. I mean, how cool is that? I don't even like classical music, and yet there was something haunting about the sounds, and the reverb. That first feel of the game with the music is so different to this massive online community. It's something small. It's something personal. It makes me think of the excitement I had when I got my first computer. It's influenced my life in so many ways, when I come to think about it.
I love this game. I always will. Any games I develop will have a little bit of TA in them, if only in spirit (so as not to infringe copyright laws).
